How to Check Tire Tread

Are you concerned with the condition of your tire tread, worried that it may be too worn out? Well, our team Midlands Mazda can help you figure this simple process out! With just a ruler or a coin, any driver in West Columbia can check their tire tread depth to ensure that they are safe. Find out how to keep your tires in good repair below.

What is the Recommended Tire Tread Depth?

When you get a new set of regular tires, the tread depth should be just about a third of an inch, 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch. Tires made for special conditions such as winter or offroading often times have treads that are deeper than normal tires. The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends replacing your tires when the tread reaches 2/32 inches or lower. When you’re cruising around Irmo, it is important that your tire tread is in good condition to keep you and other drivers safe.

Testing Your Tire Treads

The most accurate method for checking the depth of your tire treads is to use an accurate measuring device such as a ruler. If you don’t have a ruler on hand when you decide to check your tires, a simple penny could work as well. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough for how you can use a penny to check your tires:

  1. Place a penny with Lincoln’s head facing you into a groove of the tire tread.
  2. Determine if Lincoln’s head is covered and no longer visible between the grooves.
  3. If you can see all of Lincoln’s face, that means your tire treads are 2/32 inches deep or less and it’s time to replace them.
  4. Repeat this process on all four tires and in multiple locations on each tire.

Other Ways You Can Check Tire Health

If you would prefer to use a specialized tool to check the depth of your tire treads, a tire tread depth gauge and tread wear bars can be found in many auto parts stores. These further simplify the process of checking your tire threads. In addition to checking the tire treads, here are some other aspects of tires you can check:

  • Visible tire damage including rot and disintegration
  • Wheel alignment
  • Tire pressure
