Why Rotate Your Tires?

You might wonder why we’re giving you instructions on how to rotate your tires at home. We want you to rotate your tires regularly because as a consequence of the way you drive, your tires don’t wear evenly. Because of how you turn, the outside edges of the front tires will wear more than those of the rear wheels. As a result, if you leave your tires where they are, they’ll wear down differently and you’ll need to replace them sooner.

How Often Should I Rotate?

Front and rear-wheel drive vehicles need to have their tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. If you have an all-wheel drive car, however, you’ll need to rotate your tires every 3,000 to 5,000 miles because of the way that the four tires are engaged in unison. We think you should look at your owner’s manual for all the relevant information for your vehicle.

If you have a front-wheel drive vehicle: Move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left-right position, while switching the left-right position of the rear tires as you move them to the front of the car.

If you have a rear-wheel drive vehicle: Move the rear tires to the front of the car in the same left-right position, while switching the left-right position of the front tires as you move them to the rear of the car.

How To Do a Tire Rotation

This is what you need to do if you want to know how to rotate your tires at home.

  1. Put the parking brake on.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the four wheels, but don’t take them off completely.
  3. Lift a wheel up with a jack and place the jack stand below it.
  4. Take the tires off and ensure they have the right pressure. Rotate them according to the pattern suggested either above or in your owner’s manual. Place the tires back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on by hand as much as possible.
  5. Take the car down from the jack stand and finish tightening the lug nuts with the wrench. Work the lug nuts diagonally from one another in a star pattern to make sure they tighten evenly. If the lug nuts aren’t tightened evenly, the brake rotor might warp.
